How the veteran structure gate works
VAI reads the structural history of the tree: retrenchment, reiteration, functional reorganisation, recovery after failure or management, decay with adaptive living response, and rooting strategies that sustain an old structure. Emerging and Progressing observations provide life-history context; Established and Advanced observations provide the gate evidence. Heartwood decay and aerial roots contribute where they form part of an established veteranisation process. TreMs are recorded separately as habitat evidence.

Tree-related microhabitats / habitat evidence
Counts (0–10). Confirm the catalogue threshold where needed. VERA records the exact TreM identity, scale/threshold and replacement class; Integrate+ is used only to interpret habitat rarity for comparable species and actual DBH where the data support it.
Any recorded TreM is treated as assessed. If none are recorded, choose “Assessment complete” before VERA treats zero TreMs as a real observation rather than missing data.
